Well, as I write this, I am recovering from another great show. :) Ottar (Jack Garrett), Aelfwynn (Jan Ward), Osweald (Douglas Sunlin), Robert (Ben Pyles) and Owyn (Adam Pettygrew), as well as Jan's husband Jack Ward (keeper of the camera and watch) have all returned from the Los Angeles area and a successful (fourth year!) appearance at the annual Old Fort Mac Arthur military reenactment show.
This was our largest Ft Mac turnout yet. The living history display and combat displays were great, earning us many compliments from re-enactors in other groups, as well as from Members of the Public. Ottar's shade structure proved itself worth the small bother in setting it up by providing ample shade, allowing us to ignore the sun and concentrate on the matter at hand.
It was very interesting when Stephen from a neighboring group shot a bodkin-tipped arrow through a riveted-mail shirt. The result made for a provocative display. Owyn arrived without shoes, but quickly crafted a pair of pampooties from some leather that he and Robert brought along. It was a privilege to meet Jan and see her textiles presentation; the "distaff" side is often under-represented at such events.
Having lively young (and skilled!) combat wombats like Owyn (sp?) and Robert along really kicked butt. I missed the final event on Sunday, where people from all the non-gunpowder groups did a mock charge on the ACW shooters, most of them falling down on cue. I wish I had taken pictures of that. In addition, we met many enthusiastic people, members of the public, some just to look, learn and share, and a good number who were excited to see our encampment and showing interest in joining. So, overall, a really satisfying event. I want to thank everyone who came and participated.

The Danelaw - Feb 05, The Danelaw will host a gathering for all the members of Regia Anglorum North America and interested individuals

The weekend will be based on the Shrewsbury Training weekend as done in the UK.
Keeping with that concept, we have decided that kit is an option for the weekend. That's right, since this isn't being conducted for the public, it is felt that maximum participation should be encouraged. So even if you don't have Regia kit, we'd like you to come along in civvies! For those that do feel inclined to dress, then we do ask that kit adhere for the most part (say for instance it is made from cotton rather than linen) to established Regia standards (http://members.regia.org/basclot.htm). Please no furry hats, sea boots or tea- towel aprons. This is a great time of the year to pull out those woolens that you can't wear in the hot summer. Have you made kit to Regia standards? There will be plenty of opportunity to do kit checks for those desiring of such. The location will be at Camp Arnold, Hanceville, Alabama. The camp is located on US Hwy 31N, between Cullman to the north, and Hanceville to the south. It isn't on a map, but we'll make more complete directions available soon.

Visiting, take down, departure
If you would like to teach something, we can accomodate you. Please contact Bill Tate (danelaw_leader@hotmail.com) to make arrangements. In case of inclimate weather, the site has a hall for use. We are also attempting to arrange use of one of the hall's backrooms to set up a TV and video to show documentaries and the Regia training tape. It might be also possible to use the hall for sleeping space.
Speaking of sleeping. An LHE will be established. The LHE will be a completely authentic environment, but will be opened to public visitation for an hour on Saturday afternoon. Otherwise, this will be "sacred ground". If you would like to pitch up on the LHE, please contact Bill Tate (danelaw_leader@hotmail.com). On one side we will establish a plastic camp for those with Plastic- Fantastics. RV's are welcome, but there are no hookups. For those not inclined for outdoor winter camping, there are quite a number of relatively nearby hotels in Cullman to the north. Camp amenities also include flush toilets and showers. As can be seen from the schedule, breakfast will be served on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's will be a period breakfast of flatbread, eggs, barley/oatmeal (and probably more) and modern drinks. So how much is this going to cost you? A paltry $15 per adult, $10 for a child (18 and younger). This is to help pay for the site and food. No advanced payment is required, but please respond to Bill Tate (danelaw_leader@hotmail.com) to make your reservation. If you are planning on attending, please RSVP to danelaw_leader@hotmail.com

April 29 - May 1

For those who would like to come, The Danelaw will be attending the Ocean Springs Renaissance Festival in Ocean Springs, MS on 29 Apr - 01 May 05. We will be setting up an LHE and have the option of time in one of the arenas for a demonstration...I have in mind arming of the Norman knight, maybe splattering some melons!
If you don't have a period tent, there is a local campground, or I can accommodate you at my place (about a 15 minute drive from the site).
We had a great fun last year. So come out and join us. Just drop me a line off list and we can make arrangements.

Micel Folcland - January 8: WI-IL Regia’s First Work Weekend/Get-Together

Anyone interested in making clothing (there's plenty of room to cut out cloth), talking about Regia, Viking-Saxon-Norman-Celtic matters are invited. Regia membership and period dress are not necessary!
We will have an overhead projector and a DVD player present. If anyone has weapons and/or fighting experience, there is sufficient room for demonstrations. Halv, from Missouri, who had planned to attend and demonstrate combat, cannot because of time conflicts, but he will be sending videos of rebated steel combat.
Anyone interested in the era is welcome! Please spread it around. Evening in the hot tub, and crash space is available for folks without cat allergies!
Directions:
To Library (505 South Randolph, Champaign, Illinois; 217-403-2000):
Take Neil Street exit south off I-74.
At Springfield, turn left (west) and proceed two blocks (past Randolph) to State and turn left (south).
The Library will be on the left side of the street in a couple blocks.
Free parking. If weather is poor, it'll be rescheduled.

June 17

The LHE will be in the SCA camp, and public hours--the times when it will be as accurate as possible--will be announced later but will not conflict with other activities on or below the hill. By arrangement with the steward, we will be putting a rope line around the camp. During public hours, nothing within the rope line may be non-period, although visitors are free to come to the rope line and to observe, to take photos and to ask questions. Persons wishing to participate, performing period-appropriate activities should contact me at folo@advancenet.net
You need not be a member of Regia to participate, although if you participate and enjoy it, we hope you will consider membership.
We welcome anyone within the ropes who want to dress appropriately, with no oop farb. Our Authenticity Officer, Karen Bergquist (some may know her as Alfwena) will make a decision on what will and will not be allowed in camp. A box to store inappropriate material will be provided. If you have questions about what is acceptable and unacceptable, contact her at seamstrix_2000@yahoo.com. A liberal interpretation of the rules is made for newcomers but nothing overtly inappropriate--sneakers, spectacles, etc.--will be allowed during public hours.
Regia Anglorum is a living history organization devoted to the recreation of British culture between 950 and 1066. It was founded in the UK in 1986. In the past few years, it has started to establish groups in North America. Its North American membership includes many Scadians who are seeking greater levels of accuracy; the North American founder and leader is Duke Talymar gany Lloyd
I hope to see you there!

March 5 – 6: Richmond Hill Winter Carnival

Here's a report from the Torvik & Wynmerestow show at the Richmond Hill Winter Carnival this weekend.
We had fabulous weather on Saturday - eventually reaching about 5 degrees, and far warmer than the -12 it was when I left home saturday morning.
We had fabulous weather on Saturday - eventually reaching about 5 degrees, and far warmer than the -12 it was when I left home saturday morning. More...
There was a good turnout of the general public, who came to see our 2 combat displays ( at noon and 2 ) and stayed to see the assorted living history displays.
We had, as well as the mandatory and ever popular arms and armour displays: cooking, naalbinding, bone & antler working, games, etc. Surprisingly just sitting around and eating seemed to interest people a lot, as well as how we could possibly keep warm in just authentic kit.
Torvik brought out their 2 tents, and we brought along our firebox, cauldrons, benches etc.
Sunday brought more of the same, save that it was a little foggy until after
lunchtime. Between the 2 days, Chris & Anne, Mark, Beth & Jared, Kim, Brad attended, along with 7 of TorVik. We fielded a total of 6-7 warriors each day, plus kelly who got to be the kidnapped villager :)
All in all, a good experience, and a fun weekend.
As it turned out the show this weekend also turned out to be our first
paying gig. Torvik nicely split the proceeds from the event and gave us $200.00 as our share.
